VW E-Bugster Study Zooms into the Detroit Auto Show

If you liked Volkswagen's approach with the new Beetle then chances are you're going to give a thumbs up to the E-Bugster study that made its world premiere at the Detroit Auto Show this week.

Wider, lower and sportier looking that the regular Beetle, the concept's name blends the words "E" (for electric), "Bug" and "speedster". It's closest relative is the similarly styled Ragster study back from 2005.

Volkswagen's E-Bugster Concept is an All-Electric Beetle Hot Rod

At the 2005 North American International Show, Volkswagen introduced the New Beetle Ragster concept. It was a second-generation Beetle convertible with a much lower roofline and its name was conjured by crossing the words “ragtop” and “speedster”.

Fast-forward six years, and the “People’s Car” company (for that’s what Volkswagen literally means in German) is launching a similar concept at the 2012 Detroit Motor Show .

Volkswagen to Debut Beetle-Based Electric Hot Rod at the Detroit Motor Show

We just learned that Volkswagen's surprise debut at next week's 2012 North American International Motor Show in Detroit will be a pure-electric concept model based on the new generation of the Beetle – despite previous reports saying otherwise.

The conceptual EV version of the recently launched 2012 Beetle will sport a heavily modified body with a lowered roof and wider fenders with its looks slightly resembling the Volkswagen Ragster Concept (pictured above) that was displayed at the 2005 Detroit Motor Show.

VW Beetle 2011

VW Beetle

It can be it no longer off, all the Gesäusel and Getätschel, nice and friendly. And if again one tries to plant it a flower to the instrument panel then it knocks it with the Ganghebel on the paws. 14 years after the rundgelutschten reon purchasing VOLKSWAGEN beetle Beetle number II with a new target group would like to flirt: Men. No, in the sense of ” not in such a way; Gay car OF the year” (there the predecessor often was on the landing). The average man is to be finally interested in him. Saliently and angularly instead of schnuckelig and sweetly But the VOLKSWAGEN Beetle ducks itself sportily more deeply, gives to its round rear lights the run passport, gets themselves for it angular and places themselves on particularly large wheels.

VW Beetle

So far, so nicely, pardon, coolly. Whether this operation brings desired success, must show up only. As well known the old beetles are everything else as sharp-edged or flat – and nevertheless mainly of men are loved and maintained. Thus steals the exhibition from the new VOLKSWAGEN Beetle with its first exit in Stuttgart a wonderful restored sport beetle with kultigen harsh IE stickers and hectically schnatterndem 1.200er-Boxer a little.

VW Beetle

” God, is süß” , a bearded Passant is pleased about the 1961er VOLKSWAGEN. We find also. Exactly that does not want to be the new VOLKSWAGEN Beetle no more. Already not at all in its sportiest execution with aerodynamic Vesperbrett at the tail, 19-Zoll-Pneus and rassigem GTI engine under the hood. The new VOLKSWAGEN Beetle jumps directly from the gulf iv-platform with compound steering wheel rear axle on the vi-variant with multi-steering wheel and the new TSI engines of 1,4 to two litres. And engine mount version EA888 makes third acoustically powerful on modernistic activate button printing. Unusually male Grummeln of the VOLKSWAGEN Beetle Deeply and – we say the releasing M-Wörtchen – male the two-litre four-cylinder in the VOLKSWAGEN Beetle from the doppelflutigen final pipes grummelt.

Volkswagen Beetle

Those by the way like Ofenrohre beside the smoking Strohhälmchen of the Grandpa look. Gas freely, and the Beetle shoots determined by dannen like a young dog with view of the sausage. Missing ten respect HP to the 210 of the GTI are hardly noticeable. During each shifting process of the six-course double clutch transmission (in the oil bath for more torque firmness) the gas change in a bassigen Ploppen unloads itself, and there is no doubt to the fact that this propulsion to fans of each sex the Mundwinkel extremely vertically forgave. Which was also not to be expected differently. Only because VOLKSWAGEN a Retrokarosse drüberstülpt, that changes for nothing to admits balanced gulf handling characteristics.

Volkswagen Beetle

Thus the VOLKSWAGEN Beetle rolling in the future in the Mexican Puebla of the volume wuselt delicately with full road-hugging property around curves, with its precise like drive-influence-poor electromechanical steering element and takes completely close curves even some more loose: Its contrary to the basis wheel base shortened around five centimeter on 2.53 meters helps when ranking in the city.

VW Beetle idea: Great balance between tradition and modernity

VW Beetle 2012

The Volkswagen of modern times has arrived – finally. 60 years after the debut of the original Volkswagen Beetle did in 1998, the New Beetle to the market. It should reflect the traditional values ??of the ancestors in a modern way. This was only partly success was the sale after the initial euphoria, then returned later. That the beetles will continue to play a special role in the pilot program was also to stop production of the New Beetle already clear. In April 2011, then was the cloth over the new interpretation of the original Beetle aired – at the same time in Shanghai, New York and Berlin celebrated the enthusiastic audience with a Beetle, not the more appropriate had the genes of the ancestors can teach. Here, the makers of a great balance between tradition and modernity has succeeded – back to the roots of the beetle.

“The New Beetle was the idea of ??the geometry, the play of the half circles in the foreground and the result was in his time also very attractive,” explained Dr Ulrich Hackenberg, Member of the Volkswagen brand group, business development, while the driving performance in Berlin. “The Beetle, we have yet solved it, and the line again brought closer to the original, while we have clearly determined, masculine, made bullish.” The opposite New Beetle significantly wider track the successor makes much stronger stand on the street, especially if the 18-inch alloy wheels mounted under the wings are typical of large beetles.
VW Beetle 2012
The total effect of the 21 Beetle Century, much successful than its predecessor. The first impression is confirmed then the facts: The front end has become longer, the windshield and posts are moved back and now stand upright like the original Beetle. Today, the Beetle attaches a length of 4.27 meters. The designers have set the proportions of the Beetle with pinpoint accuracy, thus implement the perfect design of a new beetle can. Little attention on the brink: who ordered the new Beetle can also choose between the word “beetle” or “Volkswagen” (surcharge € 49) on the tailgate.

“Close to the Machine”, say the Americans, if they feel closely connected to the car. True, it makes you feel right at home behind the wheel of the Beetle – and finds himself very handy, nimble and agile. The technique is based entirely on the golf is just reliable and proven. Steering, brakes and chassis have been adapted to the new Beetle, a perfect balance of sporty driving dynamics and feasible locomotion. And nice that you have also thought about the sound that the 2.0 TSI (200 kW PS/147) even somewhat reminiscent of the Beetle the first hour.
VW Beetle 2012
Speaking of memories that are awakened when Beetle already, but only through the outer shape and the feeling inside. In contrast, the Beetle is not technically related to the beetle. Already have moved out of the rear engine in the front car and the many electronic devices make the Beetle driver much less work than it was many, many years of daily struggle sometimes. Between the beetle-riding comfort of the 70th years, and the worlds are today – and this is of course not surprised. “The Beetle was a car from the same mold, a product that has emerged from a holistic philosophy out. He was well thought out in every detail, he was extremely reliable and economical, “says Ulrich Hackenberg. “The new Beetle takes on all these strengths again.”

The fact is, the new Beetle is not an arbitrary fashion car. No, the Beetle is a practical car for every day and not a posh car, with the thought of how he came onto the market again in 1938. However, with the crucial difference: Today, the Beetle everything, absolutely everything much better. Only fair that calculates the price for Volkswagen Beetle with the € 16 950 in its standard version scarce. For comparison: in 1957 cost the standard Beetle 3770 €, “which was the lowest value ever. Which we can achieve with the Beetle is no longer natural, “said technical director Hackenberg. That with the new Beetle is a success story lives on, should come as no surprise, except that the complete definition of a legend succeeded so completely that already.

It Came from eBay Hell: Thunder Ranch Riot with Scat Crate Engine

If Geo had asked Isuzu to design them a car that would appeal to California’s surfer crowd in the mid-1990s, chances are it’d look a lot like the Thunder Ranch Riot. A fibreglass bodied, Volkswagen Beetle-based turnkey kit car, the Riot looks like a Geo Storm that’s been cut, shut and had Dodge Viper parts tacked on to its exterior. And it can be all yours for the low, low price of US$12,000.

Las Vegas Classic Car Showroom Selling Half a VW Beetle: What Would you do With it?

When I was in high school, my teacher had the front half of a mid-‘80s Mitsubishi Sigma (sold stateside as the Gallant) that he used for teaching students car maintenance. It was blocked off behind the front seats with wooden slats and had two castor wheels at the back so it could easily be moved around.

All well and good, but what use would be the other, engine-less half? I mean, it’d just be a steel shell with a generous (if not altogether compact) lockable storage area. This is the question posed by this rather interesting automotive oddity: a 1972 Volkswagen Beetle “Front End Display”.

1978 Volkswagen Beetle Jubilee with Only 40 Miles on the Odo up for Auction

If there’s one car that has withstood the test of time, that’s the original Volkswagen Beetle. And even though more than 21 million Bugs were built between 1938 and 2003, it’s not often that you stumble upon a pristine example with only delivery mileage on the odometer.

The one you see pictured above is a 1978 Beetle Jubilee with a mere 40 miles on the clock that has never been registered. It’s up for sale by UK-based CVA Auctions.

Nielsen: Chevy's Miss Evelyn the Most Watched Ad Ever, but VW's Little Darth Varder was the Super Bowl Favorite

The numbers are in for last week's Super Bowl event and they show that the winner is General Motors with its Chevrolet’s spot, “Miss Evelyn’s Wild Ride”. According to Nielsen, an estimated 119,628,000 viewers watched two guys describing a woman’s wild ride in a silver Chevrolet Camaro making it the most-watched commercial ever. The previous record holder was a Doritos ad from 2010 with 116,231,920 viewers. GM's winning streak continued with the Chevy Cruze ad that came in second with 119.3 million views.

However, despite the record viewing number, Chevy's lovely ladies couldn't beat Volkswagen's little Darth Vader in the Passat ad for the most favorite commercial of the game with a Nieslen likability index of 186 (the average score for the Super Bowl ads is 100, meaning VW's Passat ad was almost twice as liked as the average commercial).

WaterCar Gator: An Amphibious VW Beetle-Based Jeep Lookalike for the Budget Minded

In October ’09 we brought you details and pictures of WaterCar’s US$200,000 Python: a Corvette-engined sea going convertible / roadable speed boat. It wasn’t pretty and it wasn’t cheap, but some child-like part of us was enthralled with the sheer absurdity of it. Well, if you're on a tight(er) budget, the company also offers a considerably cheaper model. The Gator is essentially a kit car, albeit an impressive looking one at that.

Nostalgic Styling Take on 2015 Volkswagen Transporter

Even though the current day Volkswagen Transporter is a descendant of the famous Beetle-derived Type 2 vans, it has never managed to enjoy the same level of popularity among enthusiasts as its predecessors did. One of the reasons why the past two generations of the Transporter (T4 and T5) never caught on as much as VW would have liked, could be that their styling is completely forgettable.

Eduardo Oliveira, a Brazilian designer who you may remember from the 2012 New Beetle study, has come up with a retro styled proposal to fix this issue for the Transporter's successor. Presented here in a variety of models, the conceptual Transporter is inspired by the famous T1 and T2 VW vans. Granted, the renderings need some polishing up but the idea is there. Hit the break for the full photo gallery.
