Official: Renault Slashes UK Lineup, Gone Are the Modus, Kangoo, Wind, Laguna, Espace and Gordini Models

We first heard about Renault's plans to decimate its model lineup in Britain due to poor sales in a report back in December, and now it's officially official with the French brand providing more details on the changes.

The Renault models no longer available for sale in the UK are the Modus small MPV, the Kangoo passenger and commercial vans, the Wind roadster, the Laguna and the Espace MPV.

In addition, Renault has discontinued all Gordini variants while the core Twingo Renaultsport 133 range has been slimmed down to a single version.

Renault May Replace Laguna with a Crossover Model

French carmaker Renault may lift a page from its Nissan partner when the time comes to replace its Laguna series, which has not been able to establish itself in the European mid-size segment against the likes of the Volkswagen Passat and Opel Insignia.

Because of its poor sales figures, Renault recently took the difficult decision to drop the Laguna sedan and coupe (among other models) from the UK market this February.

Nissan was facing a similar problem with its most of its conventional offerings like the B-Segment Micra and the C-Segment Almera across the pond and elsewhere. The Japanese automaker then decided to introduce two very different models to compete in the popular categories, the Juke and the Qashqai crossovers, both of which proved to be a success.

New Renault Latitude Sedan Takes Flagship Spot in Range

Renault has lifted the covers off a new flagship sedan named Latitude that will in effect replace the discontinued (and rather controversial) Vel Satis.

Described by the French carmaker as "its latest international status-enhancing family saloon" [sic..], the Latitude will get its first public outing at the Moscow Motor Show at the end of August, while Europeans will get their first view of the car at this Fall's 2010 Paris Motor Show.

For those of you that keep a close eye on global automotive news, the new Latitude won't come as a surprise as it's based on the Renault Group's 2010 Samsung SM5 sedan that recently went on sale in South Korea. And by "based", we mean re-badged and VW- re-grilled... [see pictures of the SM5 below]
