Poll: Which Chevrolet Concept Coupe Would You Like to be Built?

The 2012 Detroit Motor Show is more or less consigned to the dustbin of history, but that doesn't mean we'll stop talking about the vehicles that made their world premiere at the Cobo Center and especially the concept models.

Truth to be said, high-end sports cars such as the Acura NSX and Lexus LF-LC studies are the ones we'd really like to drive in the not so distant future, but for most of us, it's models like the two Chevrolet coupe concepts that correspond to mainstream reality.

While very different in philosophy, Chevrolet's Code 130R and Tru 140S Concepts share several attributes: both models were designed as four-seater coupes for the young at age (or young at heart); both are based on existing platform architectures and use production hardware, and finally, if they were to be built, their price would be in the low $20,000s.

Chrysler Boss asks if the 700C Concept Minivan is Stupid, Beautiful or Crazy [with Poll]

If it's attention that Chrysler wanted, it sure got what it asked for with the most secretive concept model of the 2012 Detroit Auto Show, the 700C minivan. And this despite the fact that the automaker didn't even issue a formal press release on its conceptual people carrier.

But all for good reason as Chrysler brand global boss Saad Chehab explained in an interview with Australian news site Drive at the Cobo Center.

Chebab told the website that Chrysler did not release any supporting information on the 700C because it "wanted unsolicited opinion about the car and its potential" from the motor show visitors. He also said that the 700C was a last minute addition to Chrysler's Detroit Motor Show booth.

POLL: Saab Owners, Which Brand will they Turn to Now?

It's been a terrible year for Saab which ended with the worst possible scenario as after more than six decades of building cars with bespoke designs (or at least for the most part) and some quirky features, the Swedish company filed for bankruptcy on December 20.

Understandably, it's still too early to know what will happen next to the company and its assets, but even though in theory a new party could step in during the bankruptcy process and save the company, the chances for this happening are extremely slim.

Poll: Should GM give in and call the Volt a hybrid?

Apart from the humorous articles and the plethora of eBay finds we come up with, Carscoop’s bread and butter is automotive news straight from the manufacturer. And as such, we read a lot of press releases. In all the ones I’ve read, General Motors refuses to call the Chevrolet Volt a hybrid. It’s a range extended electric vehicle.

I speculate that it might have something to do with hybrids being uncool (so sayeth GM CEO Dan Akerson) or to avoid comparisons with that other hybrid. You know, the one made by the world’s other biggest car manufacturer.

Poll: Should Fiat Cut Loose Alfa Romeo and/or Sell it to Volkswagen?

Like Saab and countless other brands before, Alfa Romeo is at a tipping point. The famed Italian automaker, which once stunned the world with its gorgeous styling and motorsport victories, is now losing an estimate €200 million (US$265 million) per annum. It’s hard to believe that the company that brought us cars like the GTA, the Spider and the 158/159 Alfetta could be reduced to such a sad state of affairs.

Sergio Marchionne, the unwavering CEO of Fiat and its subsidiaries, is determined to turn the ailing automaker around. Meanwhile, Volkswagen is sniffing around for more brands and smells a potential winner in the Milanese company.

Or do you choose German engineering over British ingenuity? Whatever you choose, you’re in for one helluva ride. So, let’s count down my Top 10 Cars of All-Time.

Today’s contender is...the U.S.A.

Sports Cars Countdown: What are Your Favorite Models from the 1990s?

For me, the 1990s will be memorable for four things: the Gulf War, the death of Princess Di, the Clinton / Lewinsky affair and the Oklahoma City Bombing. There was a lot more to this decade, of course: the highest grossing film of all time (Titanic), two white rappers (Eminem and Vanilla Ice), the collapse of the Soviet Union, the release of Nelson Mandela, Dolly the Sheep, the Columbine Massacre...

But it’s those four that stick in my mind. It was both a great decade and a sombre decade, and also one that produced (possibly) some of the best cars the world had ever seen. I class ‘90s cars as those that were launched between 1990 and 1999, and also a few that were launched in the late ‘80s (’88 or ’89) and gained popularity / infamy in the latter decade.

What's Your Favorite Sports Car from the 1980s?

Ah, the eighties: the decade that brought us shutter shades, punk rock and the Cadillac Cimarron. Back in the days when greed was good, Frankie said relax and nobody knew where the beef was. It was also a great decade for cars:

The Germans brought us the Porsche 959, the AWD Audi Quattro and the BMW E30 M3. The rest of Europe brought us the insanely awesome Ferrari Testarossa, Lancia Delta Integrale rally champ and the "geography teacher on crack" Saab 900 Turbo.

In the good ol' U.S. of A there was the third generation Pontiac Firebird Trans Am, the C4 Corvette and the built-for-NASCAR Buick Grand National. At the same time, the British Isles brought us the wedge shaped Aston Martin Lagonda sports saloon (okay, it was launched in the late 1970s but it was offered throughout the '80s), the Ford Sierra RS Cosworth and the Irish-built DeLorean DMC-12.

2011 Car of the Year: 7 Finalists Announced

There were 41 candidates eligible for the European 2011 Car of the Year (COTY) award, with quite a few big names being mentioned, such as the Audi A7 Sportback and A8, BMW 5-Series and X3, Jaguar XJ and Mercedes Benz CLS. This week, the list was narrowed down to just seven finalists and, as in previous years, some of them weren't really expected to make it this far.

Our summary presents the remaining candidates in alphabetical order, with the winner set to be announced on November 29. We'd really like to know which of the seven cars would get your vote, though, so comment away below.

KIA Contemplating Switch to Alphanumeric Names in the U.S. [with Poll]

Kia may soon follow the increasingly popular automotive trend that is alphanumeric naming and abandon product names in its U.S. lineup, according to a recent statement by Hyundai Motor Co. Vice Chairman, Chung Eui-sun.

The automaker is already using a mix of alphanumeric and product names in South Korea and some other markets. For example, the recently revealed 2011 Optima and Cadenza sedans are known as the K5 and K7 respectively in the company's home market, while the Forte is said to become the K3.

Poll: Which is the Best Looking Generation of the Honda Accord?

Earlier today, Honda came out with official info and photos of the mildly refreshed for the 2011 model year [U.S.-market] Accord sedan and coupe. Given all the negative talk lately about the design direction Honda has taken as well as the not-so-positive comments on the facelifted Accord, we thought of a poll; which is the best looking generation of the North American Honda Accord to date? .

To help you out in your decision, we've added a comprehensive picture gallery of all eight generations of the Honda Accord. Check out the photos and vote for your pick after the jump.

Welcome to Carscoop Version 4.3: What Do You Think About Our Redesign?

Like car manufactures, every once in a while we update the look and feel of our site. This time, over the weekend we refreshed our 4.0 version of Carscoop for the third time since we introduced the new layout in September 2009. The redesign includes new graphics and fonts as well as some other technical changes to help the site load faster.

We're still looking for ways to improve Carscoop and since we highly value your input as readers, let us know what you think of the current 'facelift' and what you would like to see added or changed to the site in the comments section after the jump.

Nissan Skyline GT-R R34 with R35 Fascia: Stud or Dud?

Found over at our JDM-loving friends at 'Farm of Mind', is this cosmetically modified Nissan Skyline GT-R R34. As you can see in the pictures above and below, the owner of the Japanese sports coupe kitted out the R34 with the new GT-R R35's fascia.

Even though we don't have many photos to go by, at a first glance the conversion looks fairly decent from a technical point of view. However, we'll let you decide if it's a 'stud' or a 'dud'. Have your say in the comments section after the jump.

We're Back Online, Google-Bots Defeated

After a three-day hiatus because some Autobot automated system over at Google took the decision to erroneously classify our site as a spam blog, Carscoop is back online.

Now to explain. Google's "robots", "automated systems", or whatever else you'd like to call these "tools", do make mistakes. For the non-believers, here's what Google has to say about the matter:

"The disabling [of a site] is a result of our automated classification system marking it as spam. Because this system is automated there will necessarily be some false positives, though we're continually working on improving our algorithms to avoid these. If your blog is not a spam blog, then it was one of the false positives, and we apologize."

Merry Christmas and Happy "Vroom-Vroom" Holidays to all from Carscoop!

We want to wish all of you, our readers, associates, fellow bloggers and journalists etc., etc. that celebrate the day, a very Merry Christmas, and to those that don't, a happy and healthy holiday season. You may have noticed that we've been taking it a bit easy these past couple of days, and we'll probably do the same towards the end of next week, but fear not as the Detroit Show is around the corner. It's like the calm before the storm....

What Should GM do with SAAB's 2010 9-5 Sedan and 9-4x SUV?

Unless you have been living under a rock, you've probably heard about GM's decision to close down its SAAB brand after it became clear that the Spyker deal could not be completed in reasonable time - or so the Detroit automaker claimed.

Some say, there's still some hope left for the once innovative and quirky Swedish brand as during the wind-down procedure, a savior might come forward and express interest in Saab as a whole or a part of the company.

There's even talk about a second life in China as GM could sell more Saab assets to BAIC or another domestic maker.

In any case, one of the first questions that arose after GM's decision, which, let's not forget, will leave several thousands of workers without a job, is what's going to happen with the production-ready 2010 9-5 sedan and the almost-ready 9-4x crossover?

Bear in mind that the premium sedan is based on GM's Epsilon 2 platform, also used on the Buick LaCrosse and Opel Insignia / 2011 Buick Regal, while the 9-4x shares its underpinnings with the new Cadillac SRX.

Officially, General Motors has not said what it will do with these two cars nor with the current 9-3s.

In what concerns the two new models, we can think of several options that GM may have including killing them off entirely, rebadging the cars under a different name and even selling the rights / assets to another automaker - although, common sense says that the last option is probably the least likely to happen for obvious competitive reasons.

So, here's the question we would like to ask you, our readers: What do you think General Motors should do with the new SAAB 9-5 sedan and 9-4x Crossover?

PS: The photoshoped 2010 SAAB 9-5 sedan with the Buick snout was made just to prettify the article

We'd like to wish you, our readers, a happy Thanksgiving, and hope that all of you celebrating the holiday, have a great time with your family and friends. Apparently, we'll be taking it a bit easy today in terms of posts but we'll gradually return to our normal state. Being an automotive site and all, we've posted a gallery with some of the cars that we're thankful they exist - rest assured, there are plenty of other cars that we also like but didn't include in the list because we'd be here all day... Follow the break to check them out and why not, tell us which cars you're grateful for.
